What is a Center of Excellence (CoE)?

As highlighted in the WashU IT Operating Model, a CoE is a “virtual center of knowledge concentrating existing expertise and resources in a discipline or capability to attain and sustain world-class performance and value.” Centers of excellence are organizational structures that aggregate, coordinate, and manage IT knowledge and skills. A CoE in IT helps organizations improve IT operations, streamline processes, share best practices, and promote innovation, increasing customer satisfaction, efficiency, and cost savings.

What is a Community of Practice (CoP)?

A community of practice (CoP) is a group of people who share a common interest in a particular area of expertise and work together to learn from each other and improve their skills. CoPs are an important way for professionals to stay up to date with the latest trends and best practices in their field and to foster peer learning, sharing practice level insights, collaboration, and innovative utilization of practice standards.

What is the Relationship between CoEs and CoPs?

The relationship between CoEs and CoPs is symbiotic. While CoEs provide the overall structure and direction for improving IT practices within an organization, CoPs offer a collaborative space for professionals to deepen their expertise and share insights. CoPs can serve as fertile ground for the ideas and innovations that CoEs can refine, formalize, and implement organization wide. Together, they ensure that an organization maintains high standards of IT excellence and continuously evolves by leveraging collective knowledge and expertise.

CoPs may be planned and implemented as part of a formal CoE or organized by groups of professionals with shared interests and skillsets.
