WashU faculty and staff have a new option for using generative AI with sensitive university data. Claude Secure launched Monday, Sept. 14, expanding WashU’s Claude for Education offering to support work involving Protected Health Information (PHI).
Claude Secure is approved for use with WashU PHI and provides faculty and staff whose clinical, research, or administrative work involves PHI with access to Anthropic’s Claude models in a WashU-protected environment. Users can work with Claude Chat to analyze documents, spreadsheets and images; develop and revise content; work through complex questions; analyze data; write code; and organize related conversations and reference materials through Projects.
“Claude Secure gives faculty and staff who work with sensitive information a way to take advantage of generative AI within an environment designed for the requirements of that work. It’s an important step in expanding access to enterprise AI across the university while continuing to prioritize responsible and secure use,” says Josh Edwards, Executive Director Enterprise AI & Architecture.
Claude Secure provides access to the same frontier AI models available through Claude Edu, but the two WashU workspaces are designed for different needs. Claude Edu is approved for FERPA-protected data but not for PHI and includes additional tools such as Claude Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Design. Claude Secure focuses on providing the core Claude chat experience within an environment approved for PHI; Cowork, Code and Design are not available within the Secure workspace.
Both Claude Edu and Claude Secure offer Standard and Premium subscriptions. The tiers differ only by usage quota, with Standard priced at $16 per user per month and Premium at $50 per user per month.
Faculty and staff can request Claude Secure through ServiceNow. Once approved, users receive instructions to complete WashU’s Responsible Use Acknowledgement before their account is provisioned.
With the launch of Claude Secure, WashU is expanding the range of enterprise AI tools available to support different types of work across the university while providing clearer options for working responsibly with sensitive information.
