WashU continues to advance its digital transformation through the Network Modernization Project, a multi-year initiative that has significantly enhanced the university’s technology infrastructure. Since 2024, the project has delivered major improvements in network performance, security and reliability across WashU’s campuses, creating a stronger foundation for teaching, learning, research and clinical operations. Building deployments are currently at 83% completion, with total overall progress standing at 55%.
The project remains closely aligned to IT’s ImpacT strategic priorities, reinforcing the university’s commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and a world-class digital experience. By modernizing critical network systems, WashU is creating an environment that enables faster collaboration, improved access to resources and more reliable connectivity for students, faculty, staff and researchers.
As of 2026, significant progress has been made to upgrade WashU academic, medical, administrative, residential and research facilities with next-generation networking technology. These enhancements support WashU’s growing dependence on cloud-based applications, data-intensive research, hybrid learning environments and the expanding number of devices connecting to the university network each day.
During this year alone, the Network Modernization team has upgraded 58 WashU buildings across the Danforth and Medical campuses, strategically scheduling work to minimize disruption to university activities.
Security has also been a key focus of the modernization effort. Over the last 18 months, continuous Data Firewall Migrations have strengthened the university’s ability to protect sensitive information and respond to evolving cybersecurity threats. These improvements not only enhance security but also simplify network operations and improve the overall user experience
The Network Modernization Project represents more than an infrastructure upgrade. It is an investment in WashU’s future, enabling the technologies and experiences that will drive discovery, innovation and connection for years to come. As modernization efforts continue, the university remains committed to delivering a secure, resilient and high-performing network that supports the evolving needs of the WashU community.
