WashU’s AI API gateway provides access to the same models at the same prices as the providers, with WashU’s security, compliance controls, and billing built in.

Why Use the WashU AI API?

The same AI models and provider pricing, with centralized billing and university-managed security and compliance controls.

When using the WashU AI API gateway, users get direct access to models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and others at the same usage rates charged by those providers—no markup, no hidden fees. The difference is that billing flows through a WashU cost center, and requests stay within university-controlled infrastructure.

Available Models

We provide access to a broad and growing catalog of models — including the latest frontier models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and other major providers. The full list of available models, along with pricing and capability details, is always current via the APIM Discovery endpoint. The easiest way to browse it is through the self-service portal.

Don’t see the model you need?
Any model can be requested. We evaluate new models for security and compliance and add approved ones to the service. If the research or project depends on a specific model, contact the IT Help Desk at ithelp@wustl.edu or call 314-933-3333 to request it.

Publishing an Application That Uses This API?

Applications, websites, or integrations that call the WashU AI API from a fixed location (server, cloud function, or on-premises system) require the application’s outbound IP address to be whitelisted.

What you’ll need: the application’s static IP address or IP range and the self-service API account name or ID. Dynamic or residential IPs are not eligible for whitelisting; those scenarios should use the WashU VPN.

Submit an IP whitelisting request for the Secure WashU AI API to the IT Help Desk at ithelp@wustl.edu or by calling 314-933-3333.
