When people hear Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM), it is easy to assume it is primarily about executive dashboards or portfolio reporting. While SPM does provide valuable insights for planning and decision-making, it is equally focused on supporting the people who plan, manage and contribute to projects every day.

Whether submitting an idea, launching a project, managing resources or submitting weekly time, SPM provides a modern platform for capturing, viewing and managing project information throughout the project lifecycle. Rather than changing how work gets done, it is designed to streamline existing workflows and create a more consistent experience.

Teams can launch projects from approved ideas, preserving information already entered or from standardized templates that provide a consistent starting point with editable project details. Interactive dashboards provide at-a-glance visibility into project and resource metrics, making it easier to monitor progress and reduce reliance on manually compiled reports. For Time Users, time entries provide the data that helps resource managers identify trends, understand team capacity and make better-informed resource planning decisions.

These improvements support something larger than a new interface. Standardized project templates, defined governance and common processes help create a more consistent experience across WashU IT. As information is captured more consistently, dashboards and reporting become more meaningful, giving teams greater confidence in the information being used for planning and decision-making.

Recognizing that moving to a new platform requires some adjustment, the transition will include role-based training, quick reference guides, and ongoing support to help users become familiar with the new experience and build confidence before go-live.

ServiceNow SPM is more than a replacement for the legacy Planview platform. It is an opportunity to establish more consistent practices, improve visibility across projects and resource teams, and simplify many of the everyday tasks that support project delivery. The initial rollout is just the beginning, with future enhancements building on this foundation to better support how WashU IT manages work.
