What is a Security Key?

A security key refers to a cryptographic key that is used in various encryption and authentication processes to secure digital communications and data. Security keys can serve different functions, such as:

  1. Encryption and Decryption: Security keys are used to encode (encrypt) data, rendering it unreadable to unauthorized users and to decode (decrypt) it when necessary.
  2. Authentication: Security keys can verify the identity of users or systems and often replace traditional password authentication methods.

At WashU, we utilize both physical and virtual security keys to authenticate more securely and improve user experience.
